Food provided by other people
The whole purpose of Prepping is to be independent of help that might or might not ever come from official bodies. However, government agencies, NGOs or charities might eventually arrive to provide some assistance. That assistance might be offered to you in place or they might want to take you away to a communal shelter of some kind.
If that happens, do you accept what they offer or turn it down on the principle that you are doing OK by your own efforts and you shouldn’t take resources that might be essential for others who are not as organised as you are?
If your situation is desperate, as it might be if your area is contaminated by fallout from a melted-down nuclear reactor for example, or you are surrounded by fast rising floodwaters or an advancing bush fire, but you have read and acted on the advice in this book’s companion volume, Bugging Out, you should always have independent alternatives so that you don’t fall into the trap of becoming a refugee.
If there is no urgent need to leave your home and the offer to take you away is purely on the basis that it is cheaper and easier for the authorities to provide communal care than it is to supply aid to small or scattered communities or individuals, then politely refuse on the basis that you prefer to stay where you are.
They will try to insist, perhaps by persuasion or sometimes by bullying and warnings of no future help if you don’t go now. In return, remain polite but firm in your refusal. Don’t reveal the level of your preps but insist that you are all right for the next few days and have friends or family outside the area that you can go to if you need to and don’t want to be a burden to the authorities when there are others more in need of their help.
If the aid consists of food parcels and other supplies then you should accept these graciously. If you refuse, word will soon get around and both officials and locals will begin to wonder just how well stocked you are, and whether you have some to spare.
If the thought of accepting aid when you don’t need it worries you, remember that you might not need it yet, but who knows how long the situation and food parcel deliveries will persist?
If it seems like you really won’t need the extra then you can always pass it on anonymously, perhaps leaving it at night on the doorstep of someone who you know really is in need or offering it in trade for something you know someone has to spare that you could use. Perhaps explain that you or another family member can’t eat a certain class of food item because of an allergy but you really do need … whatever.
In all cases avoid appearing better off than others in your area. You might be of slender build anyway but if your diet
